It’s a unit that heats one area. It’s like a furnace that heats air only; the difference is that a unit heater has no ductwork and uses different heating elements.

A heat pump works like an air conditioner in reverse. It pulls heat from the outside and pumps it inside your home. The pump, which has three parts—a condenser, compressor, and evaporator—moves two of these three things: heat or refrigerant. If it transfers heat, it’s called a heat pump; if it moves refrigerant, it’s called a refrigerator.

A heat pump (also known as reverse-cycle air conditioning) is more efficient because it can transfer heat when you need it most in the winter. If temperatures outside are cold enough, the heat pump will heat your home instead of cooling it.
