The Story Behind Flag Day

More than 100 years after the Continental Congress declared red, white, and blue stars and stripes the official design of the United States, a young schoolteacher in Wisconsin started what would come to be known as the annual tradition of Flag Day in the United States. B.J. Cigrand started the annual tradition in 1885 by encouraging his students to participate in activities honoring the 108th anniversary of the adoption of the flag on June 14th. She called it the “Flag Birthday”. For the next 30 years the tradition spread throughout communities around the country.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day by proclamation. It was not until 1949 when President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of every year as National Flag Day. Flag Day is observed annually in communities with parades, patriotic celebrations, and flag displays. Our National Flag Day is a great opportunity for Americans to learn more about the history of our flag and show their patriotism. However you are celebrating Flag Day this year, Spencer Air Conditioning and Heating would like to thank the men and women who have fought so that we have the honor of observing this special day each year.
