Is Your Roof Losing Heat?

We’ve made it to 2015 and have yet to have our first snowfall of the season. It won’t be long. North Texas is known to have a dusting at least once in the early winter months. When it finally does start to snow, you can use it to find clues about how well your home is insulating heat, and use that information to potentially save yourself a lot of money. The next time it snows, head outside first thing in the morning. If you look at your roof and notice large patches of snow have melted off before the sun has had a chance to burn them off that means heat is escaping your home through your roof. That means money is escaping through your roof. Heating bills are expensive enough without added inefficiency. Melted ice can cause ice dams to form. This occurs when the snow melts and runs down the surface of the roof. The snow refreezes and creates a dam of ice on your roof. When the snow tries to melt, it stops at the dam and either freezes making the dam bigger or it backs up and begins to leak under the shingles into the attic or eaves. These small leaks can lead to water stains on the ceiling, mold growth, or structural damage. This can add up to major expense in home repairs that could all be avoided before trouble begins.
